The last several weeks my mind has been occupied with working on my new book about God's promises. It seems all my ideas had drained away while I focused on this new work. I gave myself a swift kick this morning and prayed for some new ideas. Actually, what came to mind was something that had been brewing or stewing in my mind since last Thursday. That was the anniversary of 9/11 and I have been thinking about how I needed to remember that day and our loss as a nation. Often times God instructed the children of Israel to 'remember' what God had done for them. By remembering God's goodness, provision and miraculous events, they could refocus on who God is and why they needed to rely upon him.
As we remember 9/11 and the events of that day- I remember the incredible loss but also the incredible courage that was offered and given for others. God allowed those events to happen, so we need to process the good that came out of those events. That does not diminish the sorrow we feel, but gives us hope. God promises in Romans 8:28 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." We do not know God's plan and do not understand the whys, but we need to trust in our benevolent and good God. He says in Psalm 34:8 "Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. Lamentations 3:25 "The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him."
The good I recall from 9/11 was the great unity as a nation to stand together against evil. Our renewed focus on prayer, praying for those in need, and calling upon God to be with us. Many stories came out of those days for rescues, heroes, heroines,and sacrifices that reveal the true character of Americans. We as a people love and cherish life and uphold each other with dignity. Patriotism, love of country and the freedoms we hold so dear, the sanctity of life and value we put upon each life make me proud to be an American. So it is good to remember and know how strong we are, and yet how we need to depend upon God for guidance and direction. He promises in Deuteronomy 31:6 " Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." (NIV)
Cling to God in times of trouble, lean upon him for deliverance, guidance and direction each and every day. He is the Almighty God and you will not be disappointed. Isaiah 49:23b "Then you will know that I am the LORD; those who hope in me will not be disappointed."
